About my Start-up

Biomanity is developing the first 100% biobased, compostable and biodegradable Super Absorbent Polymer (SAP) based on itaconic acid. Its water retention capabilities are close to petrochemical SAPs and replaces them efficiently in multiple sectors while petrochemical SAPs are progressively banned because of their harmful effects on health and the environment.

Why your idea is a “winner"?:

In an increasingly demanding regulatory and consumer context, Biomanity is revolutionizing global chemistry, agro-ecology, water management and more broadly the economy through a major environmental and societal impact.

SAP Biomanity is a circular and very favorable product for the environment: water saving, carbon and methane sequestration, biomass valorization, very significant reduction in the use of petrochemical fertilizers...

The global target market for SAP Biomanity is huge with more than a thousand of applications, including agriculture - $123 billions, the environment - $49 billions and hygiene (diapers) - $10 billions. In agriculture, for instance, SAP Biomanity combined with micro-organisms provides a revolutionary application solution as:
- it reduces water and petrochemical fertilizers consumption;
- it improves both the soil and its biodiversity and the growth of plants;

The Biomanity project contributes to the reindustrialization of France in metropolitan and overseas territories and the European green and bioeconomy strategy.

What is your current or intended business/revenue model?:

Biomanity is planning to become a manufacturer and distributor of its own SAP including all its applications based on the transformation of itaconic acid through organic chemistry processes.

Biomanity is currently focusing on 3 applications:
- Water retaining agent associated with microorganisms classified as a support fertilizer for crops in agriculture;
- various types of sludge thickener for the environmental sector,
- Super absorbent allowing hygiene products such as diapers to become biodegradable and compostable

Do you have any Patent or IP registered (related to the solution that you are looking for an investment)?:

The technology is protected by a registered patent with proprietary production processes.

Biomanity collaborates with a group of leading public and private partners in their field. They form a very complementary scientific and economic community: the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Chimie de Montpellier (CNRS), the Laboratoire des Symbioses Tropicales & Méditerranéennes (IRD/CIRAD/SUPAGRO), the École Agronomique de Purpan and Processium.

Has your technology already been implemented in any field/sector?:

SAP Biomanity is currently produced in laboratory. It will be available by the kilo in the spring of 2023. Production by the ton is expected to start within the next 24 months.

In agriculture/landscaping, associated with microorganisms, it is considered by European regulations as a crop support/fertilizer. Its effectiveness has been successfully tested and demonstrated in experimental greenhouses.

The objective is to create an innovative range of biosourced and biodegradable super absorbents for the environment, hygiene products and the agricultural and landscaping sectors integrating for the latter bio-stimulation and bio-control.

Which market and customer need(s)/problem(s) is (are) your products(s)/service(s) going to solve?:

The use of the Biomanity SAP in agriculture allows for the control of two major resources which are becoming increasingly scarce: water (serving as a water reservoir for the plant) and fertilizers (an integrated biofertilizer delivering the right amount of fertilizer to the roots of the plants), with strong impacts on the ecological transition: reduction of water consumption, protection of crops under water stress, improvement in the effectiveness of fertilizers while reducing their doses…

In the hygiene and environment sector, it provides non-petrochemical solutions that allow biodegradability and/or composting.
