About my Start-up
BioTwin has developed a high-performance wall stud made from hemp fibre and hemp shiv. Our stud is a direct replacement for steel in non-loadbearing partitions and is currently 71.5% lower in embodied carbon than common steel alternatives (based on independent LCA by BRE). With scale, we can reduce carbon impact by up to 95%, approaching carbon neutrality. Our BioStud has passed 60- and 120-minute fire resistance tests, supports partitions up to 3.6m high, and delivers acoustic insulation up to 55 dB RW — all while being easy to install using standard tools.
Why your idea is a “winner"?:
Our hemp-based wall stud will replace light gauge steel wall studs, offering property developers and contractors a low carbon option to building their non-load bearing partition walls. Regulation will force the construction industry to adopt sustainable materials and design more carbon neutral buildings. Not only does it offer a lower carbon footprint than steel studs, our BioStuds is better in acoustic and thermal conductivity and has the same fire resistance classifications with steel studs when used with a fire rated board.
What is your current or intended business/revenue model?:
Initially to outsource the manufacturing to third-parties to allow us to scale up production without having to own a facility and machinery. We will then licence our technology to a building materials manufacturer.
Do you have any Patent or IP registered (related to the solution that you are looking for an investment)?:
UK and PCT patent pending.
Has your technology already been implemented in any field/sector?:
We have secured 3x LOIs to date and will start our first pilot project this September. The pilot project will be part of a retrofit project with one of the largest universities in London.
Which market and customer need(s)/problem(s) is (are) your products(s)/service(s) going to solve?:
The construction industry urgently needs ways to cut embodied carbon. Internal partition walls may be non-structural, but they account for substantial material use — and currently rely on carbon-intensive steel studs. Globally, over a billion steel studs are produced every year, locking in emissions and missing an opportunity for low-carbon alternatives. We are targeting property developers and contractors, as well as building material distributors and merchants.
