About my Start-up

Oscillum is a startup with 100% Spanish capital founded on 06/07/2019 in Elche, Alicante by 3 biotechnologists from the Miguel Hernández University.

Oscillum was founded with the aim of becoming a highly innovative company in the agri-food and environmental sectors, using biotechnology to provide innovative and disruptive solutions. Specifically, it has developed SmartLabel, its first product, an intelligent label that, when in contact with food, notifies about its status. The technology is capable of detecting the emission of food molecules and giving rise to a reaction that produces a change in its color. This change is directly related to the state of freshness, quality and safety of the food itself. The label starts from yellow (optimal state), going through a dark green (consume soon) until it reaches an intense blue (its consumption is not recommended). In this simple way, we provide real information on the products throughout the value chain, improving sustainability due to the optimization of the use of limited resources and the reduction of food waste, we improve internal efficiency for producers and retailers by optimize the decision-making process and reduce costs in raw material losses and those derived from food safety problems. In addition, technology allows an increase in profitability thanks to the improvement of the consumer experience and by allowing a second useful life to be given to products that, although they can no longer be sold, are still in good condition. For example, using these products as raw material for the take-away section.

Oscillum has started its adaptations for fruits as well. The label will be notifying about the state of ripeness of the fruit allowing a better control of the evolution of the product, predicting its behaviour and thus, reduce cost and losses.

Why your idea is a “winner"?:

Oscillum is a foodtech with a unique and innovative tech that has a huge potential to improve the food value chain in terms of sustainability, food safety and competitiveness. Our labels reduce costs, improve decision making, improve consumer experience, improve circular economy, reduce food waste, and improve food safety by allowing to communicate with food through color changes. We are a winner because we have a great change to make a huge impact in the ecosystem involving all the stakeholders.

What is your current or intended business/revenue model?:

Oscillum's business model consists of a B2B, access to customers is done through a short and direct channel. This is a conventional sales model in which we provide our technology directly to our customers (producers, packaging companies and retailer). Oscillum's technology is affordable, an average of €0.07/label, so industrial customers do not incur additional costs and improve their profitability.

Oscillum has the support of a strategic partner at European level. This partner operates in interesting markets for Oscillum such as Spain, Germany and Austria. Thanks to this partner we have access to one of the largest European retailers interested in technology. In addition to serving as sales and marketing forces, this partner has strategic logistics and distribution centers that will make it easier for us to reach our European customers quickly and efficiently, something crucial in the agri-food industry.

Do you have any Patent or IP registered (related to the solution that you are looking for an investment)?:

Yes, we count with an IP strategy and we have applied for the patent of our meat and fish technology in Spain and we will be expanding it towards other countries based in our geographical expansion.

Due to the applicability of our technology, our intellectual protection strategy consists of the generation of subfamilies of patents based on the formulation of the technology, the application product and the metabolic change to be detected. Our strategy will be to increase the protection of this patent through a PCT and to increase the subfamilies associated with these patents depending on the type of product. We protect part of the formulation of our technology and its direct application system since it is the main innovation with respect to our competition. Our main difference is that we are able to directly measure the state of the product at the metabolic level, while our competition measures external conditions.

Has your technology already been implemented in any field/sector?:

Oscillum has managed to develop a fully functional product for meat and fish thanks to the potential of the technical team and its know-how, and we have already started adapting the technology for fruits. In addition, Oscillum has a solid intellectual property strategy with which it will protect its technology through families and subfamilies of patents at an international level based on the markets of interest.

Oscillum counts already with the help of a Spanish company with expertise in the film and plastic production. We have tested in our laboratory the production with their materials to define some potential industrial scaling.

On a commercial level, Oscillum has developed activities to attract customers and strategic alliances. We have the support of a commercial partner that operates in very interesting markets for Oscillum that will allow us to quickly penetrate the market. Likewise, we have numerous companies interested in our technology once it reaches commercialization. We have established 8 pilots with different producers and retailers, and we have 6 letters of interest.

Thanks to the agreements with our strategic partners, we estimate entering the market in 2023 in Spain, Germany and Austria with large retailers and producers. In the following years, we plan to expand to other markets such as Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, Poland and Switzerland. We currently maintain contact with large retailers in those countries such as Coop and Albert Heijn who are interested in our technology.

Once consolidated in those countries, our strategy is to enter the Baltic countries, Scandinavian countries and the eastern United States. Companies such as HKScan, Stora Enso and Walden Local Inc. will facilitate entry into these countries. HKScan is a meat producer operating in Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Latvia and Estonia.

Which market and customer need(s)/problem(s) is (are) your products(s)/service(s) going to solve?:

Oscillum is operating in a very profitable market: the smart packaging. It has an annual growth rate of 14% and it is estimated to reach a size of around 38 billion dollars in 2028. Smart packaging has a wide number of applications, but food is the major contributor of this market with around 50% of the applications of this technologies. The smart packaging market has a higher growth in North America, Europe and Asia, where there is few competitors, and the market is not yet consolidated.

Oscillum addresses both industry (customers) and consumers (end-user):

Our customers – meat, fish and fruit retailers and producers – are experiencing a loss of consumers that changes consumption habits towards more sustainable brands. In addition, they are affected by economic losses due to food waste (€18.2B) and food poisoning, which affect 15% of their benefit. Our technology allows our customers to reduce those losses thanks to the real time monitoring of their products. The information provided by the label will help to optimize internal processes, stock, transportation and storage resulting in a reduction of internal costs by 30%. Furthermore, we can improve food safety and reduce the cost of the issues in this matter thanks to the individual analysis of each of the products. Thanks to the low cost of our technology, it is viable to use in every individual packaging, changing the paradigm of sample testing by individual testing, something that the FAO classified as the best strategy to reduce food poisonings and food waste at the same time.

In addition, with our technology they would increase their market and profitability by around 20-25% thanks to: 1) Improvement of consumer experience: the consumers show a high interest in our technology since they can see the quality, freshness, and safety of products in the shelf of the supermarket but also at home when the lack of information about the products are more prominent. Our test show that consumers prefer to buy products with our technology, and they see the value that the label has, allowing an increase in the final price of about 0,20 – 0,50€/kg. 2) Second life cycle to products close to “sell by date”: Currently the “sell by date” is a parameter to retire a product from the shelf. Our technology will enable to give second life cycle to those products thanks to the information provided that clarify all the questions related to food safety and show that the product is still in good conditions to use – for example – as raw materials for the takeaway sections (very common now in supermarkets). In the case of fruits this will enable to reduce the food waste and transform products into IV gamma products (fresh fruit ready to eat).

Consumers currently also face food waste and food poisonings, a problem that affects globally and causes them to lose money (€1,000/year). Our technology will allow them, to reduce the waste at home, save money and implement more sustainability in their lifestyle. In addition, we can reduce the food poisonings at home by 20% since the technology will also identify when the product has been cross contaminated by bacteria, which is the most common way of poisonings at home.
